Is Greece a safe country to visit?

Greece is a safe country to visit. The Greeks have a low crime rate and a well-developed infrastructure. In all the time I spent in Greece, I have not once felt unsafe, threatened, or taken advantage of. However, as with any travel destination, there are always some risks and precautions that visitors should be aware of.

The risks for travelers in Greece

Pickpocketing

One of the main risks for travelers in Greece is pickpocketing, which is more common in big cities like Athens. It is a good idea to keep an eye on your belongings and to be cautious of pickpockets. Be extra careful in crowded areas, tourist attractions, and public transportation.

Natural disaster

Another potential risk is natural disasters, such as earthquakes and wildfires. While these events are not common, they are a possibility and visitors should be prepared. It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the emergency procedures of your accommodation.

Besides natural disasters, during the summer months, you might encounter a Bourini. Bourini is the Greek word for a sudden summer storm with strong winds, heavy rain, and tons of lighting. Before this occurs, locals often get a message from the authorities. Make sure to stay inside and park your (rental) car in a safe spot.

Wildlife

Greece is also home to a few venomous animals, such as snakes, spiders, and sea creatures. These animals are generally not aggressive and will only bite if provoked. But it is still a good idea to be cautious and to seek medical attention if you are bitten.

The sun

In terms of health risks, the main concern for travelers in Greece is sun exposure. The sun in Greece is strong, and visitors should take precautions to avoid sunburn and heat stroke. It is a good idea to wear sunscreen, a hat, and light-colored clothing. But most importantly, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water!

My experience

Although I have to warn you of the risks above, I also want to share my experience of Greece with you. In a couple of weeks, I will leave home and travel around this beautiful country for a year. By myself as a woman. The reason I dare to do this is that I have not once felt unsafe during my earlier trips to Greece. Never have I faced a dangerous situation or even felt uncomfortable with the Greeks. They have always been helpful, kind, and friendly with me. And in general, I have never felt the need to be extra cautious as a tourist.

Note on COVID-19

In terms of the COVID-19 pandemic, Greece has implemented measures to ensure the safety of travelers, including mask-wearing, social distancing, and testing at airports. At the moment, these measures are not active since the pandemic seems to be under control. However, it is important for travelers to stay up-to-date on the latest COVID-related information in Greece and follow potential reinstated measures.

Greece is safe

In conclusion, while there are some risks and precautions that visitors to Greece should be aware of, the country is generally a safe destination. By taking common-sense precautions and following local guidelines, you can have a safe and enjoyable trip to Greece.
